Pacific Hospital of Long Beach excels in operating the oldest osteopathic postgraduate training program in California. The program is approved for 26 interns and residents, and we have consistently graduated prominent physicians.

OBJECTIVES

Pacific Hospital of Long Beach offers a program of clinical participation carried out in a hospital setting. The program goal is to train and prepare medical students for an internship. General objectives are for each student:

  • Perform complete medical records approach to patient care, including histories and physicals, charting and patient management
  • Learn to treat the patient as a whole, rather than a disease
  • Perform patient presentation in a concise and complete manner
  • Learn history taking and physical examination skills
  • Learn differential diagnosis
  • Learn if/when the patient should be referred to a consultant and how to work with consultants
  • Learn pre-operative and post-operative care
  • Learn basic treatment principles
  • Learn when to admit a patient into the hospital
  • Learn cost-effective medicine including the use of the laboratory, radiology and ancillary services
  • Learn the appropriate use of invasive and procedural care

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

What rotations are available? We offer rotations in General Medicine, ICU, Family Practice, General Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Orthopedics, Urology, Pulmonology, and Thoracic Surgery.

Who qualifies? Any third or fourth year medical student in good standing from an AOA approved osteopathic medical school. Only 4th year Medical students are allowed to participate in ICU and Pulmonology rotations.

How long are the rotations? Each rotation is four weeks in duration, however, more than one rotation may be requested.

Do Students have night call? Medical students on Medicine, ICU and Obstetrics participate in night and weekend call.

What other educational activities are available? A full lecture schedule with didactic presentations, case reports, journal club, medical rounds and visiting professors are scheduled daily. We have a well-developed medical library with online computer access for medical searches.

Is housing available? Unfortunately, we no longer provide student housing. On occasion, Medical Education is informed of available units/rooms and we will relay that information to students when available.

Are out-of-hospital preceptors available? Preceptors are available in Medicine, Family Practice, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Urology, Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonology. Rotations are scheduled through Medical Education but final approval is required from the Preceptor before the rotation is approved.

How do I schedule a Rotation? A Rotation Request Form must be completed and submitted to the Medical Education office via fax or e-mail. Please ensure to thoroughly complete form before submission.
